What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers can be placed into 2 categories:
1. Non-permanent fillers
2. Permanent fillers

At Laser Clinics Australia, we use non-permanent fillers for the following reasons:
1. Safety: The products are made from natural substances which make them very safe.
2. Adjustability: Non permanent fillers can be dissolved to fine tune results or reverse treatment

Non-permanent fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid which is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the human body. It is essentially a sugar and water molecule.

How do they work?

Dermal fillers are employed to volumise various areas on the face. As we age, we lose facial fat as well as collagen and elastin. This can lead to flattening and drooping of the skin causing "wrinkles" and "folds".

Dermal fillers are quite commonly used in combination with anti-wrinkle injections to give optimal results. These two procedures work very well together and improve the longevity of both treatments. Dermal fillers provide an instantaneous result by filling the injection site. The amount of filling or lift is determined by how much product is used and product selection. The results continue to improve as the product draws in moisture over the first 1-2 weeks following treatment. It has also been proven that dermal filler treatments induce the body's own collagen production.

Dermal fillers will last from 6-18 months in most cases, depending on what kind of filler is used and where in the face it is placed.

The Procedure

Dermal filler injections are quick and simple procedures that provide instantaneous results with a minimal amount of discomfort and downtime.

Before treatment commences, numbing cream or a dental block will used to make the treatment more comfortable. Ice may be used in conjunction with these to minimise bruising and swelling.

Small needles (slightly bigger than an acupuncture needle) will then be used to inject the selected product into the second layer or skin, providing instant volume and lift. The treatment time can vary from 15 to 45 minutes in most cases, depending on the treatment plan and product selection.

Once the treatment has finished the area will be massaged by hand to help mould the product into the desired shape. Again, ice will be used to reduce bruising and swelling.

After treatment applying make-up is possible however, we recommend avoiding heavy exercise for 48 hours post procedure.

How long will results last?

Where can they be used?

Dermal fillers can be used in most areas around the face. The most common treatment areas are : Lips / cheeks / under eyes / chin / nose and even the jaw line. Dermal Fillers can also be injected into scars to reduce their appearance.

Can I resume normal activities after treatment?

Patients can return to regular activities almost immediately after treatment. Avoid rubbing the area, extreme heat or exercise for approximately 48 hours.

What are the side effects of Dermal Filler Injections?

Dermal fillers are extremely safe and effective, however the side effects to be aware of are :

- Localised tenderness
- Swelling, this usually take 2-7 days to totally resolve
- Bruising, this can take up to 2 weeks to resolve, however, makeup can be applied during this period.
