What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are made from a purified protein, When injected into specific muscles, it temporarily causes them to relax and softens lines and wrinkles. By relaxing certain muscles, achieving a softer more-youthful looking appearance is achieved.

How do they work?

Anti-wrinkle injections work by inhibiting the signal between the nerve and the targeted muscle, stopping that particular muscle from contracting to form wrinkles. After a period of 2-3 months, the body repairs this damaged signal and movement will slowly return to normal. This is why top-up treatments are required at 3-4 monthly intervals. Often when lines have been there for a long time or are very deep , it may take multiple treatments before they soften. Commonly dermal fillers (create link here) will be used to help lift deep folds / lines and assist with the overall end result by assisting with volume replacement.

The procedure

Anti-wrinkle injections are quick, simple and virtually painless, allowing patients to return to normal actives immediately. The needles used are very small (almost the same size as those used to perform acupuncture) and feel like tiny “pin” pricks on the skin. The discomfort only lasts for a moment and is generally very well tolerated by patients. In many cases, especially when treating near the eyes, ice will be applied before treatment begins to reduce the chance of bruising. After treatment the patient will be left with tiny mosquito bite marks, these settle within 30-45 minutes. Patients will see results within 2-3 days, however it may take up to 14 days to see the full effect. An experienced injector will be able to tailor a treatment for you to allow for small amounts of movement to avoid the “frozen” or “fake” look.

How long will results last?

Most procedures will last 3-4 months, however, in many cases the first 2-3 treatments may last only 3 months. Many studies have indicated that treatments become more effective and last longer when given every 3-4 months. If a patient makes the decisions to stop anti-wrinkle treatments, their wrinkles will return as the muscles re-strengthen.

Can I resume normal activities after treatment?

Patients can return to most regular activities immediately after treatment. Avoid rubbing the area or extreme heat for approximately 24 hours.

Are anti-wrinkle treatments safe?

Anti wrinkle injections have been used for over 20 years without any serious adverse effects ever being reported. Quite commonly anti-wrinkle injections are used for therapeutic purposes, such as: Cerebral palsy, migraines, spasticity, just to name a few.

What are the potential side effects of anti-wrinkle injections?

As mentioned above, anti-wrinkle treatments are extremely safe and effective. However, rarely, the following side effects can occur:

- Mild bruising
- Localised tenderness
- Temporary redness
- Small mosquito bite marks (these will last for less than hour).
- Droopy eyelid (occurs in 1 out of every 1000 treatments) This will last approximately 1 month. Specialised eye drops can be given to help this.

Anti-wrinkle injections for Hyperhidrosis ~ Excessive Sweating

Anti-wrinkle injections are now commonly used to treat excessive sweating of the armpits, hands and feet.  The treatment works by reducing the activity of the sweat glands by stopping the signal between the nerve and the sweat gland. The results last approximately 8-12 months.
