The Other Side: 9 Non-Beauty Related Reasons for Hair Removal!

We spend quite a lot of time and effort removing the hair from our bodies in Australia … especially if you are female, but the gender gap in both ordinary and laser hair removal is fast narrowing! While we often see clients who just love the smooth feeling of having hairless legs or underarms and the ‘clean’ skin look that comes without stubble, cosmetic sensibilities are not the only reason for hair removal. There are plenty of other practical, medical, social and religious reasons that people undertake some form of hair removal … and in some cases, laser hair removal is the appropriate method. Today we venture into the many and sometimes surprising non-beauty related reasons for hair removal.

Religious reasons

Almost every major religion has advice on how its followers should deal with their head and body hair. Buddhist monks generally shave their head, at least when committing to the monastery; Theravada Buddhist children have their heads shaved. While most religions follow antiquated logic and practices, it seems that Ancient Egyptian priests were not averse to using new technologies in their practice – depilation would be part of their daily ritual, so they could present a more ‘pure’ body image to the gods. How does electrolysis work?

In electrolysis sessions, very fine metal probes are inserted into each hair follicle. Depending on the type of electrolysis being used (galvanic or thermolysis), a DC or an AC current is passed through the needles. The DC current produces sodium hydroxide through a chemical reaction to destroy the follicle, the AC current produces heat. Some electrolysis machines use both DC and AC current.

How does laser hair removal work?

A laser machine fires beams of light of a specific wavelength into your skin. At these specific wavelengths, the light is attracted to the melanin in your hair follicles. The laser selectively heats the follicle, which usually destroys its ability to re-grow new hairs. It is rather like thermolysis electrolysis.

The difference between various technologies is the type of energy produced.

There are many schools of thought in regards to laser treatments and more specifically hair removal during pregnancy.

Hair follicles grow in repeated cycles. One cycle can be broken down into three phases.

Anagen – The growing, or the ‘on’ phase. During the anagen phase, hair cells grow rapidly, producing the hair shaft from the follicle, which itself grows deeper into the skin.

Catagen - Transitional phase. The catagen phase only lasts for one to two weeks. It is the transitional or regressive phase. Essentially, it is when the hair stops growing. During this period, the hair follicle shrinks and part of it starts to die.

Telogen - The final resting stage, or ‘off’ phase.
