The Other Side: 9 Non-Beauty Related Reasons for Hair Removal!

We spend quite a lot of time and effort removing the hair from our bodies in Australia … especially if you are female, but the gender gap in both ordinary and laser hair removal is fast narrowing! While we often see clients who just love the smooth feeling of having hairless legs or underarms and the ‘clean’ skin look that comes without stubble, cosmetic sensibilities are not the only reason for hair removal. There are plenty of other practical, medical, social and religious reasons that people undertake some form of hair removal … and in some cases, laser hair removal is the appropriate method. Today we venture into the many and sometimes surprising non-beauty related reasons for hair removal.

Religious reasons

Almost every major religion has advice on how its followers should deal with their head and body hair. Buddhist monks generally shave their head, at least when committing to the monastery; Theravada Buddhist children have their heads shaved. While most religions follow antiquated logic and practices, it seems that Ancient Egyptian priests were not averse to using new technologies in their practice – depilation would be part of their daily ritual, so they could present a more ‘pure’ body image to the gods. No doubt, if they were around today, laser hair removal would stand in for Nair cream!

Religious/hygiene reasons

In Muslim Sharia law, it is recommended that the armpit and pubic hair be removed for hygiene purposes. The appropriateness of laser hair removal for getting rid of pubic hair with females would no doubt depend on how orthodox the woman’s faith is.

Sex changes

Just as facial hair is one o the most pressing reasons for biologically born females to have laser hair removal, it is also nearly a universal practice amongst male to female gender reassigned people.

Preventing very tricky regrowth

Gender reassigned males will usually also have partial Brazilian laser hair removal, because their new inner anatomy will be constructed from previous outer anatomy that retains its hair follicles. Shaving these areas would be quite dangerous, and waxing impossible – so laser hair removal or electrolysis is recommended prior to surgery.

Proneness to ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs are a secondary beauty issue, but they are primarily a comfort and medical issue. Ingrown hairs can become infected in extreme cases, and are itchy and painful. Both shaving and waxing actually encourage ingrown hairs, where laser hair removal helps prevent them.

Cyclists

Cyclists often have laser hair removal both for safety and for comfort while receiving their regular required leg massages!

Swimmers

Every little bit counts in swimming, and especially for males, a lack of leg hair in competitive swimming gives a sizeable speed advantage.

Unwanted guests!

Soldiers are often prone to infestations of lice, fleas and ticks, so head-shaving is common. Since laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction, men only infrequently use it on the head – however laser hair removal for sideburns, beards, necks and body hair is common to make the shave less burdensome and prevent bodily infestations.

Facial seals

People in occupations that require use of a mask may choose to have laser hair removal rather than shave daily, because facial hair (yes, even a 5 o’clock shadow) can prevent oxygen masks, divers’ masks and respirators creating an adequate seal over the face.

Laser hair removal (and its temporary and sometimes painful cousin, shaving), actually have plenty more purposes than just feeling smooth and looking good … if you step into another’s shoes for a little while!

Should I Get Electrolysis or Laser Hair Removal?

Electrolysis has been available for consumer use since the 1970s, and is widely regarded as the gold standard in hair removal. Laser hair removal is a much newer technology, which many people say has just as impressive results … the treatments often seem so similar in terms of end result that many people confuse them. In fact, electrolysis and laser hair removal are very different – today we explore how each technique works, and which might be most suitable for you.

How does electrolysis work?

In electrolysis sessions, very fine metal probes are inserted into each hair follicle. Depending on the type of electrolysis being used (galvanic or thermolysis), a DC or an AC current is passed through the needles. The DC current produces sodium hydroxide through a chemical reaction to destroy the follicle, the AC current produces heat. Some electrolysis machines use both DC and AC current.

How does laser hair removal work?

A laser machine fires beams of light of a specific wavelength into your skin. At these specific wavelengths, the light is attracted to the melanin in your hair follicles. The laser selectively heats the follicle, which usually destroys its ability to re-grow new hairs. It is rather like thermolysis electrolysis.

The Showdown – Electrolysis vs Laser Hair Removal

Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks:

Benefits of laser hair removal:

• Speed: Laser hair removal sessions are much faster than electrolysis, and you’ll require far fewer to complete the treatment. One medical study found that laser hair removal was around 60 times faster than electrolysis.
• Pain levels: Hair removal with a laser is far less painful than the meticulous one-by-one zapping required by electrolysis.
• Cost: Often laser hair removal is quite a lot cheaper then electrolysis
• Accessibility: Because fewer sessions are needed, and also because laser hair removal is more readily available, the accessibility of the treatment is also a benefit of laser hair removal.

Benefits of electrolysis:

• Guaranteed permanency: Electrolysis is a guaranteed method of permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal, by contrast, is a method of permanent hair reduction. There is a greater range of individual variation in response to laser hair removal.
• Safe for all hair/skin colours: Because lasers target melanin, it can be difficult to treat clients with darker skin, or with light hair and light skin, effectively. Electrolysis can be performed the same without regard to colouring variations.

Making Your Decision

This decision tree will help you work through a process similar to the one our own consultants use when recommending a particular hair removal method, either laser hair removal or electrolysis, for a client.

Do you want to treat a large area, like your legs, back, shoulders or buttocks?
Choose laser hair removal.

Are you sensitive to pain?
Choose laser hair removal.

Do you have a limited budget?
Choose laser hair removal.

Do you have easy access to an electrolysis clinic?
If you do, you most likely also have easy access to a laser clinic. Your options remain open!

Do you have very dark skin, or very light hair on light skin?
Test laser hair removal first; if unsuitable, choose electrolysis.

Have you had poor results from laser hair removal in the past?
Choose electrolysis.

Laser hair removal and electrolysis actually serve two different needs – our consultants can help you decide between them!

What’s the best method of removing body hair permanently (if it’s possible at all)?

These days there are many ways to remove unwanted hair from our bodies including ; Shaving, waxing, depilation creams and IPL / Laser. Of all these methods, Laser has proven to be the most effective technique available today. Laser hair removal provides long term results, which offer periods of up to 6 weeks between visible hair growth and a permanent reduction in the amount of hair re-growth.

Why does hair grow on our body?

The body grows hair to assist with functions including; thermal control, moisturising and even acting as a defensive barrier, however, seeing as though laser only targets the darker hair, we are still left with thousands of other hair follicles to carry out these functions.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

Laser hair removal is an extremely safe and effective way of treating unwanted body hair , areas of the body such as the legs, bikini line, underarms, chest, back, even shaping man’s beard line are common practice. Ultimately, choosing to treat unwanted hair is a personal choice, however, if you choose to go down the path of “Laser hair removal” I suggest seeking out a credible clinic who have safe and effective technology in the hands of experienced staff.

When it comes to permanent hair removal, what’s the difference between Laser/IPL/SPL/ELOS hair removal?

The difference between various technologies is the type of energy produced.

Laser – Emits a single wavelength of light treating one particular condition. As a result, Laser treatments are safe and effective. The Candela GentleLASE is regarded as the industry standard for hair removal.

IPL – Intense Pulse Light : Delivers a broad spectrum of light treating a number of skin conditions simultaneously. This is a perceived benefit to some clients, however given that the energy is not targeted it can cause unnecessary trauma to the skin and less effective treatments.

SPL – Square Pulse Light : Is very similar to IPL however the energy is delivered in a square shape.

Elos – Electro Optical Synergy : Combines an electric current with a less intense light energy and theoretically reduces the risk of burning the skin.

Sometimes you can save a lot of money by doing things yourself. Making dinner at home versus going to restaurants will save you hundreds of dollars every week, and doing a ‘massage-swap’ with your partner is much cheaper (and more fun!) than going to a therapist weekly. However, just because something is cheaper doesn’t make it better! Since laser hair removal technology has progressed to a point where it is considered a very safe, very effective method for permanent hair reduction, a whole host of imitator devices that are billed as being for ‘home use’ have sprung up. So, do they work? Will a home laser hair removal device mean several hundred dollars saved, or several hundred dollars wasted? We find out.

How professional laser hair removal works

A professional laser hair removal machine works by applying a precisely controlled pulse of energy to the hair follicle itself, damaging the follicle to prevent it growing in the future.

A professional laser hair removal treatment:
• Is quite quick – a session on the underarms or face will take around 10 minutes
• Is personalized – your skin type, body chemistry and hair colour are taken into account
• Is permanent after the initial course of treatments has been completed
• Works best on patients with fair skin and dark hair

The better models of professional laser hair removal machine will also include a cooling feature. The discomfort often stops many people getting optimal results with lower-quality machines (and especially with at-home machines), since the procedure has to be repeated for good results.

How home laser/IPL hair removal works

Many home ‘laser’ hair removal units actually use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to get rid of the hairs. The potential for unskilled use means that these units aren’t built to be as powerful as salon devices; the lower output means that they often simply burn the hair (and sometimes a small patch of skin), without touching the follicle. The hair simply grows back after a couple of days.

In many cases, the makers of at-home ‘laser’ hair removal devices are reluctant to give any details about how the unit actually works, to help you in evaluating its efficacy.

Pricing comparison

You’ll often see a comparison of the pricing of at-home systems versus professional treatment, and the write-ups are usually heavily skewed in the direction of the at-home kits.

Of course, if the at-home kits were actually effective in permanently reducing hair, this comparison would be fair. However, you are actually comparing the cost of a treatment that doesn’t work a majority of the time, versus a treatment that has been proven to work.

Any money spent on home laser hair removal that ultimately grows back was a waste – you may as well have waxed or shaved your hair. By contrast, when you pay for professional laser hair removal, if you complete your course of treatments you are guaranteed permanent hair reduction, with the potential of permanent complete removal.

We would always recommend that you undergo professional laser hair removal treatment, at a clinic that is happy to explain all the details, potential and risks to you. Check out the seasonal specials, and pre-pay your treatments to make your laser hair removal much more affordable … and you’ll have truly silky smooth skin and be able to spend all those shaving or waxing hours doing something much more fun!

There are many schools of thought in regards to laser treatments and more specifically hair removal during pregnancy.

The simple answer is “it is safe to have hair removal during pregnancy”, as laser is visible light and does not change cell structures. However, for medical legal reasons we prefer not to treat the area above the waist and below the breasts during pregnancy.

Candela’s guidelines for laser treatment during pregnancy are as follows:

“Any patient planning to undergo laser treatment during pregnancy should consult with their OB-GYN practitioner for guidance prior to the procedure. An evaluation of the risk-benefit ratio of deferring the procedure will be determined by the physician.

Consultation with and approval by the physician or practitioner managing the pregnancy is advised.”

Hair follicles grow in repeated cycles. One cycle can be broken down into three phases.

Anagen – The growing, or the ‘on’ phase. During the anagen phase, hair cells grow rapidly, producing the hair shaft from the follicle, which itself grows deeper into the skin.

Catagen - Transitional phase. The catagen phase only lasts for one to two weeks. It is the transitional or regressive phase. Essentially, it is when the hair stops growing. During this period, the hair follicle shrinks and part of it starts to die.

Telogen - The final resting stage, or ‘off’ phase.

Hair Removal

For the purposes of hair removal the ideal treatment time is during the anagen phase. During this phase the melanin production is most active which is the chromophore leading lasers target. The gold standard in hair removal (Candela GentleLASE ) is arguably the laser of choice. With a patented DCD cooling device results are achieved with minimal discomfort.
