Most facial vein enlargements are caused by environmental factors such as sun and wind damage. Enlarged blood vessels affect men and women alike and can sometimes be the result of a genetic predisposition. Men are, perhaps, less prone to the problem than women as hormone factors (including contraception and hormone therapy treatment) increase the risk of vein enlargement.
Enlargement of blood vessels, which can occur anywhere on the body, is usually the result of weaknesses in vein walls or poorly functioning valves delivering blood – result? a “spiders’ web” of small, reddish-purple veins under the skin. Larger dilated veins which bulge above the skin’s surface are varicose veins and may appear as swollen clusters and will need surgical treatment.
Laser Clinics Australia can help with spider veins using Candela GentleYAG lasers to shrink or fade the vein without damaging the outer layer of skin. The light energy process allows the vessel to heat up and break down, the body removing the waste naturally. Treatments may take only minutes but probably no more than up to ½ an hour. The number of treatments will be 2-6 depending on each client’s needs, with 1-3 months in between treatments.
Discomfort is minimal although a prickling sensation may be felt. The skin area to be treated is always cleaned and, if needs be, a local anaesthetic applied. Protective eye glasses are worn during treatments.
Any redness or swelling will subside within a day and although the treated vessels may appear darker initially, they will gradually fade over a few weeks. Sometimes bulging appears but will normally disappear within hours of treatment. Sometimes the veins just disappear straight away!
It should be noted, however, that treated veins may reappear due to weakening of the vessel wall.
