Testimonial
“I was very nervous about my first ever Botox treatment, but the Nurse, Emma Birney at Laser Clinics Australia made me feel very comfortable and assured. She thoroughly explained the procedure to me and answered all of my questions. She even booked me in for a follow up consultation. It has now been two weeks since my treatment and I can’t believe the result, she has taken 10 years off my face and everyone is commenting on how good I look”.
Sarah, Windsor

Testimonial
“I used to get my lips enhanced by a Cosmetic Surgeon before I discovered Emma Birney a nurse at Laser Clinics Australia. I found Emma to be very professional, her consultation assured me that she would apply her expertise to achieve my desired result.. and she sure did. My lips look natural and better than any other time I have had them done and I can’t believe it was half the price for the same product! Happy to recommend and say I am one of Emma’s many loyal patients.”
Constandina, Kings Langley

Emma is currently available Thursdays at Laser Clinics Australia Rouse Hill Town Centre, with Saturday appointments coming soon. Complimentary consults are available for patients to discuss their facial rejuvenation options.

8 Reasons to See Your Doctor Before Getting Injectables for Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is an uncomfortable and embarrassing condition. While most people who suffer from hyperhidrosis have a version of the condition known as ‘idiopathic’ (unknown cause), it is not always safe to assume that you are simply sweatier than society believes is acceptable, and to go straight to have sweating treatments like onjectables for hyperhidrosis. There are several serious conditions that can also cause hyperhidrosis, and you should be tested for these before simply masking a potentially dangerous problem with injectables for hyperhidrosis. Today we check out a comprehensive list of those conditions.

1. Hyperthyroidism
In this condition, your thyroid gland releases too much of its metabolic hormone, causing increased energy usage which produces heat, and triggers sweating. There are usually a range of other symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism, and it is easily controlled with medication.
2. Hyperpituitarism
The pituitary gland also produces hormones that control metabolism, and excessive production can again cause hyperhidrosis. This condition should be controlled with medication, as it can have other effects in the body.
3. Excessive production of catecholamines
Catecholamines are the precursors to adrenaline, and are involved in the regulation of the fight-or-flight response … which as we know, is associated with sweating! This excessive production might have a medical cause, or it might be an emotional response. If it is an emotional response, it is appropriate to have sweating treatment or injectables for hyperhidrosis, while you work through the emotional issues.
4. Local Nerve Reflexes
Lesions such as ulcers on your veins can cause a local hyperhidrosis response. If your sweating is very localised (for example, it is limited to a 50-cent piece sized patch on your leg, or to half of one underarm only), this may be a cause.
5. Infections
Infections that are present systemically (across many sites in your body) can cause hyperhidrosis, as your body expends energy trying to fight the little critters and produces heat in the process. You would almost invariably have other symptoms with this type of hyperhidrosis, and clearing the infection will stop the excessive sweating – no injectables needed.
6. Diabetes
The disturbed metabolism associated with diabetes can cause excessive sweating.
7. Spinal Cord Tumours
The sweating response can be caused by tumours – the uncontrolled growths of cells can press on nerve endings and cause them to send unnecessary signals to the brain.
8. Brain Tumours and other Neurological Problems
The same is true of tumours within the brain, and of other conditions in the brain which affect your lower brain centres involved in temperature regulation, etc.
If you do suffer from hyperhidrosis, however, don’t assume the worst! The vast majority of cases of hyperhidrosis involve emotional triggers or are purely idiopathic. In some cases, the hyperhidrosis itself is a self-fulfilling prophecy – people sweat, then become nervous about their sweating, which causes them to sweat more. Your doctor will ask you a few basic questions to rule out these conditions, or may order some simple blood tests … and then you’re on your way to a dry, free, sweat-less future.

7 Real Women Talk About Injectable Fillers

We’ve all heard the marketing hype about injectable fillers. A pure substance which occurs naturally in the body, wide range of applications from non-surgical nose jobs to wrinkle removal, a way to look much younger without the overly tight look of facelifts, treatments that cost a fraction of what surgery does, have no downtime and almost no risk. However, we also know that there is usually more to the story than what the marketers choose to tell us, so today we check out comments from a panel of 7 real women who’ve had experience with injectable fillers, and find out how their expectations matched up to reality.

“I was so worried about all the bad reviews: the possibility of lumps, discoloration, etc. Finally it got to a point where I had to something rather than nothing and just risk the consequences … As of now, 3 days later, my eyes look beautiful: no more eyebags, no lumps, no bumps. I look like myself, only way better.”

Many women who have never had a cosmetic procedure done also agonise over the decision, like this lady who had her under-eye bags treated with injectable fillers. Fortunately, like this lady, most are very pleasantly surprised by the results.

“Well, the fillers hurt! My doctor’s technique was flawless and she was very gentle, but the needle pricks all around the lips were more than uncomfortable. All in all it took an hour to complete everything.”

As with any injection, there is usually some pain associated with injectable fillers! We are always happy to supply numbing cream to help smooth the experience, though. If you get part of the way through a treatment and decide that you would rather the cream, we are also happy to stop.

Please note that while some people say that dermal fillers hurt a lot, others are very surprised by the lack of pain! Individual factors, the injection site, the number of syringes and whether or not you use numbing cream all play into the pain question.

“I made sure to drink plenty of water during the days before and after the injections. I also iced the area a few times at home on the days I had the procedure.”

The way you take care of your injection site at home can have quite an impact on your recovery time. Staying hydrated and using ice are two elements in the after care puzzle – your injectable filler consultant will update you with the others!

“Overall I am very happy with the results. I really do think it’s important to go to someone who knows what they are doing. There are a millions medspas out there with questionable injectors.”

Right! This is the same advice we give every day. Always look into the credentials of the person doing your injectable fillers, ask to see before and after photos from previous patients, and check any reviews you’re able to find for the practice on the internet.

“Once the swelling went down I was a little disappointed because I thought the initial effect was perfect, but I think that’s to be expected.”

Many women are thrilled with the initial results from injectable fillers … and disappointed when the swelling goes down! However, an ‘underwhelming’ first time with dermal fillers is actually the mark of an experienced doctor or clinic. Using less filler than ultimately needed is a strategy to help assess the final ‘look’ that your procedure will create, and to help avoid unnatural looking results.

“I have been using anti-wrinkle injections for about a year, this was a great addition to my injectable regime.”

Anti-wrinkle injections and injectable fillers are used for the same general purpose (to get rid of wrinkles), but the type of creasing that each works best on is radically different. Some women may need dermal fillers but not anti-wrinkle injections, some may need anti-wrinkle injections but not fillers … some may need both!

“I went back to work on the 4th day post injection, I was unhappy about the conspicuous bruising at work.”

Much like pain levels, the amount of bruising you get depends on individual factors, injection site, and the number of syringes you have injected. To reduce bruising, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen before your injections (use paracetamol instead), avoid exercise afterwards, use ice and pressure on the injection sites for some time afterwards, and don’t lay down after your dermal filler injections.

Compared to most cosmetic procedures dermal fillers are non-invasive, well tolerated by all different body chemistry types and generally very safe. It is actually for these reasons that there are so many questions floating around about them! Millions of women globally now get dermal fillers or wrinkle injection-type treatments each year, and so there are lots and lots of questions that people want answers. Today we go straight to the MD to get answers to 5 common dermal filler questions.

What is the best dermal filler?

The answer to this question depends completely on which area of the face you want to treat with dermal fillers. Some brands are said to be best for true wrinkles and fine lines. Others are a good option for deeper troughs and folds, such as a very depressed nasolabial fold or tear troughs.

Fat grafts are sometimes grouped in with dermal fillers, but the results can vary vastly from body to body, and location to location.

What type of dermal filler is best for lip augmentation?

There is a favoured dermal filler for lip augmentation. Most cosmetic technicians find that it diffuses away from the injection site more smoothly, which is critical for locations like you lips where every millimetre matters. However, the suitability of any dermal filler for use in your lips depends on your initial lip shape! Doctors recommend that you slacken off your jaw tension and let your mouth flop open naturally – if you can’t see your top row of teeth when you do this, you can end up with ‘trout pout’ or ‘duck lips’ from dermal fillers.

What is the best method for dermal filler injections in the tear trough area?

If you’ve done a fair bit of research, you probably already know that there are different injection techniques for different areas of the face. Some cosmetic technicians inject the dermal filler directly upwards into the tear trough and then again downwards over the cheekbone, while others use a cross-hatching method along the nasojugal groove. Some do the injection from inside the mouth – though this does carry an additional risk of carrying oral bacteria into the periorbital region.

However, there is no single right or wring way to do a dermal filler injection anywhere, and the tear troughs are no exception. It depends on how the doctor or cosmetologist is most comfortable working.

Anit-wrinke injections didn’t do what I’d hoped for my frown lines. Do I just need more, or should I try dermal fillers instead?

The results that an individual gets from an anti-wrinkle injection treatment depends completely on the cause of their frown lines. In almost all cases, a combination of anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers will achieve the best results for the frown line area; the dermal filler restores lost volume, and the anti-wrinkle injection prevents it being prematurely dispersed by excessive muscle movement.

Which dermal filler is best at helping my body build collagen?

Dermal fillers aren’t designed to help your body build its own collagen, though they do replicate the effect of natural collagen. Some people confuse laser treatments, which encourage collagen production, with dermal fillers which simply fake it. Dermal fillers can have much more noticeable effects than laser treatments, though laser treatments may be longer lasting and ideal for very fine lines and textural issues.

What are Dermal Fillers used for?

There are various dermal fillers applied to different treatments in the cosmetic industry. Dermal fillers are used to fill lost volume in the skin resulting from loss of collagen. They can be used to treat a number of areas including lips, cheeks, necks, chin/jowls, mouth corners, décolletage, backs of hands, under eyes, naso-labial lines ( from mouth to nose) and some wrinkles where folds or flattening may have occurred.

How long do Dermal Fillers last?

Dermal fillers last from 4 months to 2 years. Permanent fillers are not recommended as they may lead to complications. Dermal fillers are a different approach to wrinkles from anti-wrinkle injections which are used to treat wrinkles developed from facial expressions (smiling, frowning, laughing etc) but they can also be used very successfully in conjunction with each other.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?

Dermal fillers = rejuvenation of the face and take years off an ageing appearance. There are some side effects after treatment which may include redness and mild bruising (the next day) where needles have been injected but these are short lived (maximum one week) and the effects of the dermal fillers are significant. They reverse the appearance of sun damage, smooth fine lines and rehydrate the skin, leaving an even, dewy tone as well as returning full facial contours.

A topical anaesthetic is usually applied but some discomfort may occur if many injections are needed to complete the treatment. Usually three treatments are needed.

What are Dermal Fillers made of?

One of the most commonly used dermal fillers is stabilised hyaluronic acid injected in long threads. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin’s structure and can hold up to 1000 times its mass in water. It is a malleable, smooth gel that flows easily and consistently in to the skin with predictable results. Placed deep within the dermis tissues, these dermal fillers create a lift while boosting natural hydration plus collagen and elastin production. These are what make skin plump, firm and taut.

Please call Laser Clinics Australia to discuss the treatments which will give you the best results.

Remember: information =empowerment

There were two newspaper articles about wrinkle removal in the weekend papers of August 14-15, 2010. If you didn’t see them, this is the essence of what they had to say.

The first, by Jane Hansen in the ‘The Sunday Telegraph’, notes that rejuvenation of skin using injectables in no longer the domain of celebrities. There were some quotes from some well-known women including:
• Sonia Kruger, Radio and TV Star, “If it makes you feel better about how you look then why not?”
• Anna Bligh, Queensland Premier, says she has used injectable wrinkle treatments to erase frown lines, stating it “makes her feel better”
• Rebecca Gibney, the ‘ Packed to the Rafters ‘ star says, “ I just believe in trying to make the most of what you’ve got”

But what was really most interesting was the endorsement of injectable wrinkle removal and collagen-replacing dermal fillers, by real women, living in the suburbs, just like most of us. Kathy Naseby, a 50 year old mother and grandmother from Richmond says that when she “looked in the mirror, I looked tired and my cheeks weren’t as full as they used to be. I’d put make-up on and blusher and think, well it doesn’t look any better.”

The article says that Kathy is already a fan of injectable wrinkle treatment to rid her forehead of wrinkles so she has now opted for dermal filler to “reinflate” her sagging cheeks. It also says that Kathy sees dermal filler treatment and her quarterly injectable wrinkle treatments as part of her beauty routine – as normal as having her roots done. “I look really good, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, and I reckon I look 40”, says Kathy….” No-one stops aging but you can maintain yourself”.

The article also quotes Alison Smith, from Moree, who despite being in her mid-20’s is already a devotee of injectable wrinkle removal and dermal fillers for her lip augmentation. “I use injectable wrinkle removal because it opens up my eyes and the dermal fillers give my lips volume… I don’t have to age – I prefer not to.” Says journalist Jane Hansen, “Miss Smith represents a Generation-Y trend in stopping wrinkles forming in the first place”.

In Andrew Hornery’s PS column in The Weekend Edition of the Sydney Morning Herald, he comments that speculation is rife that 26 year- old model Jennifer Hawkins has had cosmetic treatments done. Some have suggested that she may have had lip injections and had some crows feet removed with the use of injectable wrinkle removal treatment. But whether Jennifer has or not, Andrew Horney comments, “whatever Jennifer Hawkins is doing in the looks department, it’s working”.

And, really, that’s what cosmetic treatments are all about. All of these women are simply making the most of what they’ve got, and in turn, making them feel good about themselves!

Some interesting practical facts from “The Sunday Telegraph’ article are that:
• Australians spent $448.5 million on minimally invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures last year. This was not only a record, but one that reached an all time high when other budgets were being nipped due to the GFC
• Around 1.5 million injectable wrinkle removers were administered in 250,000 wrinkle reduction procedures in Australia last year

…. so let Laser Clinics Australia discuss what cosmetic treatments can also do for you
